Taurus Energy has carried out very successful development work during 2010 and 2011. In addition to yeast production on a demonstration scale, the company has also made major advances in methods for the development of improved yeast strains. To prevent these yeast strains from being used without a license agreement, a marker is required that proves that the strains were developed by Taurus Energy. After four months' research in partnership with Chalmers, in a project supported by Vinnova, a unique marker has now been found that does not exist anywhere else in the natural world.
- The marking is comparable to a barcode on products in a store. It is a unique identification sequence that shows that it is our yeast. The sequence is placed in a specific location in the genome, further ensuring that it is our yeast, says Lisbeth Olsson, development manager at Taurus.
The marking is produced in such a way that it is particularly suitable for use in industrial strains, i.e. it meets the requirements that can be made from an industrial point of view. This opens many new doors for Taurus.
- For Taurus, the marking means that we will now be able to work to a greater extent by letting potential customers test our yeast strains in their test plants. From the point of view of commercialisation, this was essential to our future, says Lars Welin, MD of Taurus Energy AB.
In addition to the advances with the marker, at the end of June Taurus attended one of the biggest ethanol conferences in the world, Fuel Ethanol Workshop & Expo in Indianapolis in the USA. This offered many opportunities to present Taurus and the company's yeast strains to several of the USA's biggest ethanol producers.
