Taurus Energy AB: Taurus Energy, French company partners in pursuit of EU-financing for ethanol project

Taurus Energy is one key participant in an application submitted by the French company CIMV to the EU-Commission regarding the construction and operation of a major demo plant for production of ethanol from biomass. The plan calls for the demo plant to be built in France and Taurus Energy will be responsible for the handling of the fermentation step in the process. The EU-Commission will announce in January 2015 which of the submitted projects will be awarded the financing. Taurus Energy views the participation in this project to be of substantial value for the company, both from a research oriented and commercial standpoint.

- From a business viewpoint our participation will showcase Taurus’ participation on the market which also serves to enhance the value of our company. In addition, we will receive more resources to already planned research and development activities, which will further improve our chances for future sales of licenses, says Lars Welin, CEO of Taurus Energy. CIMV (Compagnie Industrielle de la Matiêre Végétale) specializes in recovering the lignin which is present in all biomass and utilize this for production of special chemicals by means of their own patented process. The proposed EU-Project is named 2G BIOPIC and with the help of CIMV’s patented method the lignin will first be separated from the biomass before the subsequent enzyme and fermentation steps will be used to convert the hemicellulose and cellulose to ethanol. DYADIC is an American manufacturer of enzymes and will be responsible for the development of an optimized enzyme mixture in the process for this project. Taurus Energy as the sole provider of yeast for the project will be working on optimizing some of their existing yeast strains and deliver the most effective strain to be used in this process. To further enhance the scope of this application, two other French companies have joined the project, CRITT BIO INDUSTRIES and TWB (Toulouse White Biotechnology). These companies will add technical support to the main players for this project, Taurus Energy, CIMV and Dyadic. Taurus’ role as the developer and manufacturer of an optimized yeast is estimated to require 27 man months of adapted research and development for the project which will run over a three year period. The majority of the time spent by Taurus Energy on this project will be financed by the EU-Commission. The main goal of this project is to verify the very successful results already achieved in a pilot scale at a scaled up demo level to be developed by the participating players in this process.
